Can't load Linux Mint from DVD or USB

Thank you for your replies. I have now solved this problem - I had Adblocker installed; I paused that and now I can install Linux Mint okay.

Thank you.

I have been running Linux Mint 18.1 on my laptop for quite some time. I wanted to upgrade to Linux Mint 18.3. When I inserted the disc in the DVD drive there was a lot of whirring and clicking for a couple of minutes and then nothing. When I loaded 18.1 in the past it was straightforward and the icon appeared on the desktop, I clicked on it and the installation proceeded smoothly from there. But not only will 18.3 not install 18.1 won't either. I checked that the DVD drive is okay by playing a DVD of a film and that worked fine. So I tried installing from an external hard drive and also from a bootable USB stick on to which I had downloaded a version of Linux Mint 19 using an application named Rufus. At first i though these attempts had worked because an icon appeared on the desktop but when I click on it it reveals lots of files but none that when clicked on leads to Linux being installed. I tried using the boot repair function but no joy. I hope someone can help me please. My technical knowledge is not high.

Hi sharnbrooke, and welcome to LQ.

Here are the official installation instructions for Mint. Follow them through carefully (even though you think you've already done a step) and let us know at which point you encounter issues.

Is the DVD an installation image? If so you need to restart your computer and boot from the DVD.

I want to install a more recent version of Linux Mint. I currently have installed 18.1. I have tried restarting my laptop but the disc won't install. In the past there has been no problem; I was able easily to run as a live disc or reinstall the OS.

Is this an icon that would appear when inserting the DVD while running windows?

Have you tried bootting by going into your bios settings and set the dvd as the first boot device?
