The Bodhi app center is just a website and opens in your default web browser. I'm guessing you need to disable hardware acceleration cuz of old GPU on the browser, or update the browser. Bodhi 5.1 is kinda old.

From terminology command prompt, try:
Code:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install firefox
Then open the bodhi app center in firefox, see if that works for you: https://appcenter.bodhilinux.com

Or to open chromium without hardware acceleration, try:
Code:
chromium --disable-gpu
Then while it's open go to settings and disable it for next time. (Scroll down to the bottom and select the “Advanced” option. Scroll to the “System” section and toggle “Use hardware acceleration when available” and turn off)

Thanks for the suggestions enigma9o7, but I can't get them to work at all. Im just about to give up. Thought i might give this old 32 bit Toshiba Satellite a new life, but maybe not. I just got done trying Ubuntu, but it hardly worked at all -- very very slow

Just a suggestion and nothing against Bodhi but give antix a try as it is very light on resources and would most likely work for you on that pc.
