You might not have sufficient permission to cd to that directory.

For some reason I also think that you have to go one directory at at time on some ftp systems. The usual answer is what devUnix stated.

i connect to localhost with user "ftp".
and "ftp"'s home directory is /var/ftp
it seems that "ftp" can't see the file in /media/

/media can be read
drwxr-xr-x. 3 root root 4096 Mar 8 21:43 media
and sub dir also
dr-xr-xr-x. 10 kid kid 6144 Nov 17 08:48 RHEL_6.2 i386 Disc 1

i don't think that is right.
/var/ftp is the default directory for anonymous user.when you login to ftp server with a legitimate user, you will be redirected to the home directory.
i assume you installed vsftpd, so there's an option named "chroot_local_user=YES|NO".if the value is YES, users can only cd to their home directory.and if it's NO user can cd to the entire file system.
