Brother MFC printer does not appear in modem device table
Brother Multi-Function printer logs onto modem, but does not show up in modem device table, thus cannot be given a correct address in the 'ADD NEW Printer Dialog' at localhost:631/printers. The printer sees the modem, but the modem does not see the printer. I now play to reset the modem to see if tht corrects the problem.

My guess is that you are trying to print via wifi, and your printer has no ip or the wrong ip for your setup. Usually, you need to initially connect the printer locally via usb, and assign it a suitable ip (In the range your modem uses). Then you need to configure your modem to assign the printer that ip. If you have some driver from the manufacturer to help, use it. Do a search of the threads here to see if anyone sorted wifi issues on a brother printer. I've a Cheapo HP, and I had to run a windoze driver to give my printer an ip, which sucked.
In addition, post the model number and read the manual. Those that have a display, wifi can typically be configured locally. Otherwise via its built in websever if it has an ethernet port and wiring it to your router or via USB.
Also, have you got the necessary drivers? Brother printers are not often directly supported by cups, but Brother do provide drivers packaged in either .deb or .rpm format. A quick search on the model should get you a URL do download them. Also a link to the scanner drivers for Linux.

The easiest way to install Brother drivers is to download and use their installation script (as root of course). You enter the model and choose rpm or deb, then the necessary files are downloaded and installed. For all-in-1 models, the scanner driver will be installed too in /usr/lib/sane, which is not necessarily the right place for your distro.
