when redhat boots up it asks to enter 'i' for interactive mode
so enter into interactuive mode and then it asks u to start for all the services u want to start
and u do not start the eth0/networking service
once this happens
se ur network configuration
when eth0 takes a long time to start, it either means that you have an incorrect ethernet configuration, or that you don't have a cable plugged into it. When it is set to search for broadcasted IP's through DHCP but there isn't a router/switch or whatever you use then it just sits and waits until like.. 3-5 minutes passes and it says [FAILED]. Just do what masand said, press "i" when it says "Press i to enter interactive mode" when booting, and don't start the eth0, and edit your ethernet configuration (i know in mandrake the command 'drakconf' brings up all the configurations for the computer.. i don't know what to do for RH7.3..)
If you have a router or switch or whatever connected to your ethernet card, and would like to see if you can connect, here are some commands (as superuser.. root):
"ifconfig eth0 up" (to 'turn on' the card ('down' would do the opposite)).
"dhclient eth0" (to search for a DHCP connection, and connect to it).
Thanks masand and student04, I have it worked out fine. The times when it woulden't load is when I have the ethernet cable unplugged. Thanks for your help!

even if the cabe is unplugged it should load after some time it should not freeze (even if u have kept ur ip adress to obtain automatically)
i my system it waits for just 30 secs.
how the timeout goes i i have no idea about that
