Unhappy Boot problem after Ubuntu instal

After an apparently successful installation of Ubuntu 12.10 from purchased Canonical DVD I cannot boot it. Although Ubuntu appears in the BIOS I get "missing or corrupted" I have also tried installing from USB but get the same result. My laptop is an Asus X401A with Windows 7. Any solutions?

Brain dead BIOS probably - boot the DVD and post the output of this run from a terminal
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
(lower case ell)
