Boot failure after installing Slackware

I have a 40GB HDD Seagate, I was not able to partition it using Win98 because I went directly in installing a WinXP. When the installing is finished and reboot, an error occured. There is no bootable disk, even my harddisk was not able to boot. I partition my harddisk using the WinXP, after the error I decide to try installing the Slackware 10.1 but still it was not able to boot. As I read on my book "Linux Undercover" it suggest to use "fdisk /mbr" but still it does not boot.

What are the right partitioning if I have a 40GB harddisk, and how can I attain the "1024 cylinders" like what the book says. I want to run a dual boot using WinXp and Slackware.

Please help because I really want to learn Linux. Thanks.

Need more information. Is this a new disk that you've just installed? If it's not new, was there a working filesystem (fat32, ntfs, ext3)? Is the disk recognized in the bios?

Rule no.1 : check your BIOS settings.
Rule no.2 : First of all get grub or lilo running (insert slackware installcd, go to configure and get to configuring!)

My friend borrowed my hard disk and told me that there is WinXP already installed. When I was about to intstall the linux, I boot from the CD Rom using the WinXP and partition my hard disk using it (using WinXP). When the installation is finish, then problem occured " Boot Failure". What should be the proper partition if I have a 40GB Harddisk.

Thanks a lot guys, you're such a big help.

More power,

Genesis
