basics not working at fresh install

Hi

I've jsut enough linux experiance now to realise something is fishy but i can't find a fix. This is what i've noticed..

on a fresh install of the Debian 7.2
ifconfig c & iptables command cannot be found - I suspect the OS has installed without the tools.

So i go ahead and try apt-get install the stuff. aptget is present and has the following permissions:
Code:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 194932 Jun 6 05:17 apt-get
but when i execute the command the following is output:

Code:
master@Vent:/usr/bin$ su root ./apt-get install gcc make
Password:
./apt-get: ./apt-get: cannot execute binary file
This seems to be the strangest thing? The VM has literally been in existence no more than 1hr at time of writing.

Any ideas?

That's not how you run commands as root.

Code:
$ su -
Password:
# apt-get install gcc make
or
Code:
$ su root -c "apt-get install gcc make"
