I am trying to install pango-1.4.0, and it gives me an error saying I don't have the correct version of autoconf. I go download autoconf, do ./configure , make, make install without a hitch, but pango still gives me the error:


WARNING: `automake-1.7' is missing on your system. You should only need it if
you modified `Makefile.am', `acinclude.m4' or `configure.in'.
You might want to install the `Automake' and `Perl' packages.
Grab them from any GNU archive site.


I go to do autoconf --version as my user and get:

But when I do autoconf --version as root, I get:


Autoconf version 2.13


What's going on? Why doesn't the pango installer recognise autoconf 2.59 as root?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried installing automake? http://freshmeat.net/projects/automake/

The same exact thing happens under automake:


automake (GNU automake) 1.4-p6


is what I get when I do automake --version under root, but i get


automake (GNU automake) 1.8.3


when I do the same command under root.

Have you tried upgrading your version of os to the another version the reason I say this is possible dependancy issues which I had were solved by just upgrading it.

I would update to Mandrake 9.2 or 10.0, but I hear there's major compatibility issues on dual boot systems w/ Windows XP, and that's something I can't quite afford. Is there any way to fix the problem w/o installing a new version?

I don't know of a way to fix potential dependancy issues you would have to hopefully wait for a post from someone who is absolutely switched on in regards to this issue. Since I don't actually or never have had the problem I can't suggest any way around it.
