Audio recording problem

Hi,
I'm just working on fedora for the first time for my proj. So having many difficulties. My first doubt is that is it possible to record audio in single user mode using fedora??? If so pls help me with ur ideas.. I need it for my proj work..
I tried arecord and rec in single user mode.. I'm getting an error stating pulse audio connect error. Connection refused..

Why would you want to record in single user mode in the first place?

Actually i'm doing a speaker verification system.. Just to show its appln in real time, i just thought of authenticating a person after recording his voice in single user mode and then switch to GUI mode. Though it is possible to start the GUI mode directly,there s no simple way to show the real time appln of my proj.
