ATI Driver Problem

Upgraded from Suse 10.0 to 10.1 and need to reinstall the ATI Driver. The system is an AMD Athlon, 1 GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon 9550. Using a procedure posted on the Linux and Open Source Blog May 12, 2006. This procedure worked correctly until I attempted to add the driver (8.27.10-1) to the xorg.conf file. After executing:

aticonfig -initial -input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

I get the following message:

file not found, load xorg.conf installer.
If I ls the etc/X11 directory, xorg.conf is clearly listed. Thought it was a permission issue and did a chmod 755 to the file. The same error message is returned. Any suggestions?

assuming the driver package comes with an install document, I would just read what needs to be changed (for nvidia anyway, it's just making sure 2 modules are commented out and 1 module isn't, and editing the driver line in the device section[s]), then run "vi xorg.conf" and do it myself.
