Are you the administrator (root user), or can you talk to the root user of that machine?
Updating the main web site typically requires root privileges (by default) with apache.
Depending on the distribution, the main web files are located in different directories. RedHat 7.x has the main web site files in /var/www/html/ by default, for example.
If you know/are the administrator of the Linux system that hosts the web site in question, I suggest creating a symbolic link (in your home directory) to the main web site directory, so that you don't have to look for it every time. More importantly, ask the administrator to give you write permissions to the main web site directory.
