Any RECOMMENDATIONS for partition size?

Hi

I have an hdb of 8GB on which I want to install linux; 256MB RAM.

I am a budding developer & shall be doing a lot of data analysis (I'm into bioinformatics), programming, working with databases, compiling, CD/DVD burning, DVD movie editing etc. For all this I think I'll need a seperate TMP partition - Right??

I intend to have large amounts of personal files plus some new program compiling/installing like MySQL, Oracle etc.

I will be installing SimplyMEPIS 3.3 which is desktop-oriented & lacks many devel packages.

My current setup:
/ - more than 3GB (Root)
/home - more than 3GB (HOME)
/boot - 50MB (Boot)
/tmp -???? (TEMP)

Could someone please put in their recommended EXACT values for the size of partitions (other than boot of course)?

Thanks a lot.

Having separate /tmp in your case may be risky. You may have very big temporary files and may easily run out of space on /tmp. My suggestion:
/home - 4GB (HOME)
/boot - 50MB (Boot)
swap - 512MB (because DVD editing requires much memory)
/ - all that's left
