Any good package HOWTOs?

Dear All,

I've noticed several different package behaviors, and get stuck each time I encounter something new. I've got the unzip-and-tar part down, and I understand the single-directory configure-make-install kind. What, though, about the ones that untar into a morass of common directory names and doinst.sh? Is there any good documentation for all the common package types I would encounter? Thanks.
