An old Linux program - I can’t get it to run. It seems to be corrupted. Would like confirmation that it is indeed corrupt (or working)

Hello everyone,

I found an old, intriguing program that was(is?) included in distros. However it will not launch and the several savvy people I have had help me have gotten nowhere.

All I need is for a pro to install and launch the program and tell me that it worked or not.

I would be happy to pay a small fee of $ for this.

DM me for details.

I hope this is appropriate and thank you in advance.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

What is the name of the program? Where did you find this program and how old is old?

It is possible the program was written using different library versions or even architecture. If that is the case then it isn't going to run as is.

Thanks for the reply Michael.

The program is called liVES. It’s a video editing program of sorts. I do not recall how I originally heard of it. But I’m interested in its feature set. I’ve read write-ups on it, it once was functional. I can find the program, but it will not run.

A friend who knows Linux tried to help me install it. It never ran by the time he had to go. He gave me some advice but I can’t understand it.

So I thought I’d see if a Linux savvy person can get the thing to work. That would be super helpful for me, just hearing someone confirm that it will or will not run. Hopefully it would be very easy.

What 'distro' are you using?
What does it say when you type: lives ?
(strace is my next idea...)

In addition to what linux distribution and version you are running, how did you install the program? Did you install it from the distributions software center or download the source?

Did you go to the LiVES web site and read through the documentation? There appear to be instructions on installing in the index although it appears to be from 2009. The main page shows last updated 3 years ago.

Probably the program is incompatible with current software and requires old functions and so fourth. But that is not necessarily the case.

Another good move is to run
Code:
ldd /path/to/executable |grep found
Any output is missing libraries, or perhaps wrong versions.

Even if it passes that, it may still crap out. Have you got it in a modern OS or is it in a time capsule? 2009 program, 2009 OS? The time capsule approach stands a better chance.

Do you have the necessary dependencies installed on your system?

Looks like it still builds fine for Fedora 39. I didn't try running it, though. https://koji.rpmfusion.org/koji/pack...?packageID=455

Thanks for all the questions! I don’t know an answer to a single one of them.

It’s been almost a year since he tried and frankly, failed to get it installed. The details escape me. I’m not a Linux user. But if this program works I will be.

My first goal is to find out if the thing works. As far as I know the program will not operate.

If the program is viable I would think one of you guys could get it running in minutes. But if you struggle with it in any way it would be impossible for me to do it.

Anyone willing and able to do this for me?

It’s also the only thing I plan to use on Linux (for now). So if it starts right up with a certain distro, or other simple variable, that is extremely valuable for me to know.

Your questions and attention are appreciated!

Thank you Smallpond, you responded while I was composing my last message.

I’ll see if I can do what you posted.

I appreciate all the questions from everyone and I’m sorry I currently don’t have answers. I don’t want you to think I’m ignoring them. If something doesn’t come together quickly for me I will do some digging to answer them. I will have to set things up again to answer your questions.

I suppose I should have mentioned how far we got. Got it installed and upon launch it would never make it past the splash screen.

Yancek,

Yeah I’ve been over that page many, many times. Yes I see 2009, that’s why I called it old. That’s where we got the files I do believe.

I looked over the documentation many times. It’s been a frustrating experience because I am not knowledgeable about Linux. Or it’s frustrating because it doesn’t work. My goal is a quick check from someone who knows Linux. Should be super duper easy to confirm?

I have a Ubuntu 22 virtual machine and lives installed from the regular repository and it started up fine. The only other application I had to install was ImageMagick.

Michael,

Thank you so much! That is great news.

I’ll try to replicate that setup.

It really means a lot that you helped me with that!

Sorry I don’t have answers about what I was running a year ago and what went wrong. I’m going to focus on moving forward.
