Post ADSL Connection goes slow

I have a computer running SuSE 7.0 (Kernel 2.2.18) that does nothing
but IPForwarding and Masquerading the ADSL Internet connection to 3 WindowsXP machines
via ipchains.

When i start the machine everything is fine (pings apache.de with 67ms) but after about one or
two hours everything goes terribly slow (pings apache.de with 2333ms and worse)

Why? and what can i do about it?

does this happen at about the same time everyday?

It could be the isp's fault (it may load ballancing at the isp)
