change the line:
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/dave vfat defaults 1 1
to
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/dave vfat umask=0222 1 1
and you'll be able to read it as a user, but you'll need to be root to write to it, which is how i have mine set up...kinda safer that way...
you'll need to reboot for this to take effect...

after googling it, i found that umask=0 works for read/write as a user...at least for me in slackware...
