persistence isn't fully the best way to install programs. Not all distro's can be made to boot on a usb easily and because of the way persistence works, not all apps may work correctly. If you want to be sure your apps are installed correctly then install a newish distro to a usb flash just as if it were a real hard drive.
In some few cases a real install versus a compressed live image may have noticeable speed differences. A fast usb or usb3 would be fine.
I've used pendrivelinux.com installs a lot and they are good for many things. I just have faster drives and much larger drives so it doesn't make as much sense for me at least.
I don't have usb 3.0 on my desktop, it's quite dated unfortunately. However, they do sell SD flash cards class 10 type. Maybe a class 10 SD card might improve the read speeds. Thanks for the suggestion
