Question 'drake console command question

i'm running gnome 2.something in mandrake 9.0. does anybody know why the 'pid' console command won't work? 'man pid' gives me the man page for the command, but entering 'pid' gives me 'bash: pid: command not found'. i've tried it as myself and as root. what am i doing wrong?
