Wireless interface defaulted to 'Master' mode

hi, all

My wi-fi card (a Netgear MA311 PCI card) running in Debian 7 is defaulted to 'Master' mode, which acts as a Access Point. I have to manually change it to 'Managed' mode every time i boot up to force it act as a client connecting to an Access Point.

Command used to change mode:
Code:
root@16big:/home/erdos# iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
before the change (default):
Code:
root@16big:/home/erdos# iwconfig
wifi0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"test"
          Mode:Master Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: 00:09:5B:68:4E:68
          Bit Rate:11 Mb/s Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry short limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off

lo no wireless extensions.

          Retry short limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:6 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:4 Missed beacon:0

eth0 no wireless extensions.

after the mode change:
Code:
root@16big:/home/erdos# iwconfig
wifi0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"test"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: None
          Bit Rate:2 Mb/s Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry short limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off

lo no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"test"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: None
          Bit Rate:2 Mb/s Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry short limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
Link Quality=0/70 Signal level=-73 dBm Noise level=-73 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:6 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:5 Missed beacon:0

eth0 no wireless extensions.
any idea how to set network interface mode to 'Managed' by default?

I used 'wicd' as my network manager.

thanks

What Wifi driver do you use? Is it hostap?
One simple way to set mode to managed, adding the command to start-up script if driver setting didn't work.
Normally, user local script API is /etc/rc.local file. You can add the command, iwconfig wlan0 mode managed, into the file.
