WiFi setup on Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop

Hi,
I'm using WiFi for the first time in my life, and I d'léd Ubuntu, and it thankfully detected everything automatically, but since I don't like to do things that way, could everybody post their favourite link to immense WiFi knowledge, and setting it up? If you could post info in this thread, that would be great as well. Just the basics to start with, like what is SSID?

Thanks.

Turning Atheros wifi off in HP machines.

I don't know about you people but I F-ing hate WIFI and would never have it in my place of business. I hate EMF waves. I hate cell phones. They're all designed for mind control purposes and to cook your brains. They give me tinnitus galore.

However it can be a necessary evil from time to time while travelling. If you have an atheros wireless card here's how to disable it or at least turn the light that suppose mean off OFF on AN Hewlett Packard laptop.

Back to trying to interpret this reasonably recent thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1579241 from someone who was in a similar situation as me:

Anyways, to make a long story short here's what I've done and I hope I don't fubar this because I'd really like to surf wireless with Linux and not Windows when I do use wireless:

Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
COPY,PASTE THIS text into a basic file called blacklist.conf

Quote:
#this blacklists the ath5k driver of internal Atheros AR-5001 miniPCI adapter to avoid interference with bandwidth or speed of external wireless N cards. Do NOT blacklist yenta_cardbus otherwise your PCMCIA wireless adapter will not work!

blacklist ath5k
into

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

RE-START YOUR COMPUTER.

IF YOU HAVE AN HP NOTEBOOK YOU'LL GET SOMETHING LIKE THIS LIT UP ON YOUR SCREEN:

Which means Mark Hurd is no longer groping your daughter with his machines. (joke)

OK, I'm back at home now and not using WIFI, one quick question - if I use a WiFi connection, can I see the computers of OTHER people using that connection? Does that require a special access point or whatever it's called?

"They're all designed for mind control purposes" ???? For what purpose would 'they' want mind control? How,
do you figure, can 'they' do that with wifi radios? Do you recommend wearing a pointed tin foil hat around wifi?
Who is 'they' anyway?
