Why Sendmail takes so much time to handle incoming SMTP packets?

I use sendmail coming with RedHat 7.2 as LAN mail server. It works correctly but problem is my colleagues complain that it takes too long to send local mail (over 60 seconds per "send" action). Does anyone have the similar experiences about such issues?
