I am afraid it is not solved in that whilst I have got Ubuntu working with DHCP wireless I still cannot get wireless working with a static IP so as far as I am concerned it is still not working properly.

Since reading all the history and diversions here would be too tedious for most I have taken the liberty of starting a new thread here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ip-4175602878/

your wireless works.
while the remaining problems are certainly network related, they have nothing to do with setting up the drivers for your wireless.
it's good you started a new thread.

My original question was: "Which versions of Linux work properly with RTL8187B?"

My view is that so far my Ubuntu is working but not properly as I have yet to find a way to get static IPs to work or switch between them via the GUI.
