man route

...typed on the command line.

What are you meaning to do with the route command?

I am trying to figure out how I can setup the "correct" routing on my linux box. I also want to learn more about routing... For example, can I have more than 2 default gateway routes on my linux box? For example:

I have a linux box with a PPP dialup to a static IP. So I guess there would be a default route to route packets back to the dialup connection.

But what happens if I want to also add another route, to my DSL static IP on my LAN through eth0 on the linux box? Can I have two routes? How does it know which route to take?

Thanks for you help

I have two NICs that pull IPs from a cable modem. Therefore I have two default gateways. The way it works is that it chooses the first gateway in the list and uses that one. Type "route" at a command line and see the results. This will tell you which default gateway everything will use. However I have a firewall/router script running that allows me to route different int IPs through the different gateways. This way I can have two different computers with different ext IPs.

magnakuz,

Sounds like you want redundant uplinks?

You usually have at most one default route per interface. If you have 2 interfaces, maybe a NIC connected to your cable modem, and another connected to your DSL modem, then you can use redundant uplinks in a load balancing scheme.

See this article. If you have any questions about the commands check the respective man page.
