Unhappy Where and when is the MAC (HWaddr) read?

I have an embedded linux kernel that is using the wrong MAC address. When booting, U-Boot reports a valid MAC address and can obtain a valid IP address via DHCP. However, when the kernel issues a DHCP request, it' is using essential garbage. the invalid MAC address, i.e.:HWaddr 02:00:10:00:00:00

Where and when does the kernel get the MAC address?

Thanks
Robert

I'd say when networking is started, looking at the commands/functions run in the network script may help to determine where the problem lies.
