Question What is the difference between downloading from Mirror and Bit Torrents?

What is the difference between downloading a software from its Mirror and its Bit Torrents Server? Which option should I use and why?

AFAIK, Torrents are more interresting because they distribute the load over several nodes whereas a server/mirror may be overloaded. For more info http://www.bittorrent.com/

If it's a large file then I'd use bittorrent, less strain on the servers you're downloading from, potentially higher speeds, more community minded, files are verified as they're received and mainly, easy to pause/resume.

Its not really worth it for smaller files though.

When you say you're not able to run it, what do you mean? Have you tried typing "bittorrent" in the shell?

If I use the 'bittorrent' in the shell the following error occurs.

[anindya@localhost ~]$ bittorent
bash: bittorent: command not found

If I use double 'r' instead of single (bittorrent) the same error occurs.

I use Fedora Core 3. If I start downloading a .torrent file it starts downloading and I am able to view the download manager which is in built with Firefox. As for example, I just started a download Slackware 10.0 from LQ ISOs. It just downloaded a file 'slackware-10.0-install-d2.torrent' which is only 53kb in size. I don't know whether this is just a link to download the full CD or it is the ultimate .torrent file. Only I can assume that this cannot be an full CD file. Please guide me as my tutor. Thanks in advance.

The .torrent file essentially contains information about where you're downloading from, what files etc. so that the bittorrent client knows. What happens when you double click on it?

firewall?

I dont really know much about Federa Core 3 but could it be your firewall settings?
Here is a GUI for federa core 3.

dns number

I'm trying to download the fc4 dvd iso image with bittorrent.

Bittorrent seems to work. (An estimated six days for a download seems a bit long ..)

I get the same message (Version check failed: no DNS library),
I think the "unknown" tag in the Client column of the peer list has got something to do with it.

Somehow the ip adres is a different one, I can't find mine in the peer list.

I don't think the slow speed has got anything to do with the firewall. If the firewall would block bittorret then bittoret would not be able to make the p2p connection.

It think the speed has got to do all with the cable bandwidth. The bandwidth splits up somehow, in little portions.
And with the seeders of course.

With fc3 I feed like Captain Kurk, exploring the galaxy.

How can I give bittorrent some warp speed ?

Bittorrent allows you to share the file or "torrent" with other users as you are downloading it, but when you download from a mirror, you are just doing a regular http or ftp download from a webserver.
