what I need

do I need xinetd to use the internet with a cable modem....I have been searching to find out what components are needed and cannot feel confident in my answers.

I have redhat 7.0, and am having trouble configuring my ethernet card, setting up networking...and I wonder if I am missing some libraries.

No, you dont need xinetd to use the internet with a cable modem. Xinetd is what starts your internet services like ssh server, telnet server, http server, etc. If you dont plan to make these services available to other people on the net, then you dont need xinetd.
