Hi , eth0 means your ethernet card. For networking this should be needed,if u dont have inbuilt nic, purchase pcmcia nic card and installed in to your machine. It will work.

Try "lspci" and look for the card. Once you have found it, you can figure out the module it needs, and "modprobe" it. You can also add it to /etc/modules.conf for autoloading at boot.

If you have documentation on the laptop, you can always read that and identify the ethernet card.

wow.. It's definitely not going to have an onboard ethernet card... you need to go get yourself a PCMCIA (PC Card) LAN Card for the notebook.. then you will have an eth0 entry... also.. since you will need to purchase one... make sure it is a card well supported by linux...

Good Luck..

are u trying to network to a desktop computer... u r going to need network cards in each one and also a cable to connect them both....u can do this directly with a cross over cable from pc to pc or u can use a hub or router
Mainly u r going to have to make sure u have the network cards in each before you can go any further. Check in the back of your laptop and other pc that u have a slot (similar to where u would plug in your modem) there is usually a small light (which will light up green when u plug in your cable)
The next questions are which type of os are u trying to network to? and by which method?
