what are the ic sockets for in a nic?

hi,

i am curious about nic's and i have several questions about them...

1. what are those blank ic sockets for in a nic?
2. why are they blank?
3. what's their function?
4. what would be the difference if the ic's that should be placed there are installed?

Some nics have space for a bootable network bios to be added, I believe.

so there won't be any sense of having it if the network wouldn't be big enough (business type of network)
