VSFTP newbie..I have gone this far, please help

Hello, I have been spending the last 72 hrs trying to learn linux.
I am working with Red Hat 8 and I am trying to configure everything to have a Web, ftp, DNS, and mail server.

Right now I am almost done but vsftp is boggling my brain. All I need from Vsftp is to let me log into the apache directory so I can upload things. It doesn't matter if log in to /, just as long as I can get to the htdocs.

Ok, I do have vsftp installed and I am able to log into / with a user/group I created (fakename/fakename). I can view the entire drive but I just can not upload or chmod anything (permission denied). I know what the problem is but I don't know how to handle it. I think the problem is that...all the files are owned by root. I know that I have to give my newly created name/group permission but how to do that is beyond me.

I have read a few articles that I have found scouring the web, but they seemed to be aimed at the Advanced user. So there for I guess I will ask the advanced user to help me?

go to the directory ABOVE where you upload

chown -Rf fakename:fakegroup ./yourftpdirectory
(change ownership to you ftp group)

chmod -Rf 0775 ./yourftpdirectory
(allow any user in ftpgroup to create files)

You should read more on chroot and no shell accounts.
FTP is dangerous, if you can see your entire drive then anyone who can intercept your username and password can too.

Hi, Thank you very much for the reply! I have scoured the web with any info about creating a FTP user with now shell account.

I have done that after several attempts and reinstalls. I think I somewhat understand things better. This is what I have done....

Created a user that is only allowed to be in the apache directory. The only problem I have now is the permission (can't upload, make directories...etc but I can download)

So will changing the permission of the apache dir. wont cause any problems?

Why don't you try using OpenSSH to upload and mod files???
