VIA Velocity NIC not detected during install

Ok i am totally new to Linux so please bear with me. Anyways I installed Redhat Linux Fedora Core 2 and it only detected certain pieces of hardware in my computer. I don't really care about the other pieces right now but I do want to get the NIC installed somehow so that I am able to use up2date and get onto the internet. My motherboard is an Abit AV8 which has an onboard Ethernet LAN card. The chipset is VIA Velocity i think the number is 6122. I think I either need to 1 update the kernel as the drivers are in a later kernel then I have or 2 I need to get the onboard LAN drivers. I have searched all over the internet and found some of the drivers but I have no idea how to install them. I have even found the RPM for it but when i try to run the RPM it starts and then says i am missing a kernel-modules package. Once again I am new so I may be doing something totally wrong or have downloaded the wrong drivers. I can provide any other information that anyone needs to help me. Also if someone could help walk me through it via instant messaging that would also be greatly appreciated. Either way any replies and help I receive will be welcome.
Thanks in advance.

That seems a little old to be trying to install with if you can try with a newer/the latest Fedora it will have better support for the hardware on your motherboard. Just for reference I have the same board when I first installed a few years ago it was with a 2.6.8 kernel and everything was detected without problems using it so get a distro with a kernel the same or newer and you should be fine.
