Very slow ftp download as well as web surf

Hi there!

I think the issue I´m having is quite common (i've seem many posts related to this issue googling), but i haven't been able to find a solution on the Internet.

The thing is that I getting ftp download rates between 0,5 and 1Kb/s when i've got a 3mbps cable connection.

Seems to me a linux problem, because when rebooting to Xp I get about 340Kb/s of download speed doing nothing but going to the very same page I was trying to download from in linux

There is no dns problem (i can ping properly and fast), i've disabled the ipv6, firewall disabled, selinux too...

My network is set up like this

Cable Modem - Router - Switch - Computers

This configuration was working originally till I upgraded my FC2 to FC4 (I actually reinstalled FC4). As soon as FC4 was up and running I found out about those slow ftp downloads.

The funny thing is that, after this first problem, no matter what distro I install on any of my computers, I get the same problem all the time (I've tried with FC2, FC3, FC4, Debian Sarge)

I also tried to connect my linux box directly to the Cablemodem with same luck (very slow browse and download), but when rebooting to xp everything when smooth again.

I found somewhere something changeable on sysctl and I tried it, but didn't work

#/sbin/sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_moderate_rcvbuf=0
#/sbin/sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_default_win_scale=0 (got "unknown key error" when run)

I tried
#/sbin/sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0

but no download speed increase.

I've been running FC2 on this machine since its release with no network problems at all. Before FC2, I had installed RH8 and RH9 wih no problems either.

My network cards are the rlt8139 and the Intel pro/100

After more than 3 years using linux I don't want to go back to Windows because of this weird thing.

If somebody has an answer, please post.

Try setting a lower MTU. Linux, by default use 1500 but it can cause problem if you pass trought several routers, as you create fragmentation.
Try setting it to, let's say, 1452 to try, then raise it up slowly 'til you notice slowdown. (command is like : ifconfig eth0 mtu 1452 )

I once had this problem too
