I have redhat 8 and would like to share my net connection
((urgh - google it - i hear you say))
well i found an article on ip masquerading ...which seems to be what i am looking for. but the article

only describes it for 2.2 kernells whereas im running 2.4,
so i went and asked if anybody knew any articles about it...and they said look up iptables . (which got me confused) what is different from ip tables and masquerading??
and which do i need to use?

As i cant really search for help without knowing what im looking for!

The 2.2 kernels used ipchains (like the howto). The 2.4 kernels use iptables not ipchains. There are lots of howtos and tips on this forum.

well i managed to find the upto date version

but...
at the top of the page it says
"At this point, you should have your kernel and other required packages installed. All network IP addresses, gateway, and DNS addresses should be configured on your Linux MASQ server"

and i cant see anywhere in the tutorial it talking about setting up the server ip/gateway/dns address...

am i jus being blind? lol

If your macine is setup on your network already and has net access then that has all been done.

well havnt got round to setting up net yet ...
although my modem (bt voyager) does have eci drivers
so i dont think it shud be too much of a problem ((touch wood))

now time to read this manual a fair few times lol

hello again
i've just been browsing the firestarter site... and from reading the setup page it seems soooooooo much simpler!!!!
is it really as easy as it sounds lol ...cos from my experience in linux things usually arent that simple.

I was thinking that if it works like it says then i can setup a temporary connection sharing "service" till i can manage to get my head around iptables and the like.

Should this be the way to go?

firestarter is just a frontend used to set iptables rules. It should be able to get you started.

managed to get the internet up and running at last. I think the biggest problem i had was setting up the modem.
But once the modem was working it was a 2 second job getting the internet shared with firestarter....but now i would really love to learn how to use iptables etc.

So i guess im gunna have to do some studying!

well lets hope i didnt speak too soon

i have configured firestarter to open ports 4662 and 4672 ((both used by emule))
but when trying to connect to a server i get the error "LOWID" which is caused because the ports are not accessible ....i cant understand it!
any ideas?
