Using print servers

Hi guys,

If you have read some of my previous posts, you will notice that I am in the process of setting up a Linksys print server. It works great in Windows but I'm not getting anywhere in Linux. I'm very new to Linux so I am trying to configure it through KDE as I am not very comfortable with all of the command lines yet. This particular print server supports TCP/IP and IPX/SPX. As expected, Linksys does not provide tech support for Linux. They do have some instructions for Linux on their website, but it all went right over my head. Here is the link. I'm sure you guys can figure this out:

http://www.linksys.com/support/suppo...?spid=18#tcpip

Any ideas would be appreciated.

You should be able to set it up as a standard LPR/LPD type printer. This is pretty easy with KUPS. Just click "add printer", pick "LPD", for hostname put in the IP address of the print server, and for queue put in "raw", then pick the model of printer, and finally give the printer a name.

One of two printers working

Hey Sixpax,

Thanks so much for the help. I now have one of my two printers up and running. Now I need help with the other one.

I have an HP LaserJet 1100 and an HP OfficeJet R80. I set up the laser printer the way you said and it worked fine. When I set up the officejet and printed the test page, it tried to print on the laser printer. How do you tell CUPS the difference between the printer ports on the back of the print server? There are three -- LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3. Right now the laser printer is on LPT1 and the officejet is on LPT2. In windows, those ports were assigned a special name. It was based on the model number of the print server. LPT1 had a port name of SC406299_P1 -- LPT2 was SC406299_P2 -- and so on. I am wondering if Linux will recognize these port numbers, and if so, were do you insert them in CUPS? Right now, no matter what printers I set up, it is always going to try to print to the printer on LPT1.

Any ideas?

Ok, try doing this... setup the other printer exactly the same way except where you put "raw" for the queue, put "L2" instead.

IT WORKS!!!

Thanks Sixpax,

It worked. I'm off and running.

Since my last post, I played around a bit and figured out another way to make it work. I can also set it up as a SOCKET printer and use the info provided in the online documentation. If I remember right, LPT1 is socket 4010, LPT2 is socket 4020, etc. I set it up the way you told me to do it and it works great.

Thanks so much for your help.
