This may also help (running this on the server):
Code:
nslookup google.com 192.168.1.1
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: google.com
Address: 216.58.217.110

What Ubuntu version is the client using?

What does the client /etc/nsswitch.conf hosts: entry contain?
Code:
grep hosts /etc/nsswitch.conf
