I've managed to install kppp but having trouble getting it configured... I think i've got the modem configured right but the "account" part of it is giving me trouble. I can't tell what type of logon authentication I have, like CHAP or PAP or script. wvdial doesn't ask, I just give it my name and pw and it did the rest.

I still however don't understand the difference between as you say: use my HTC 6800 phone as a USB modem and if all I can really do is just surf the web because surfing the web IS what a modem is used for, right?

I apologize if I am missing some key element here but again, I'd be happy to A) learn more about it, and B) help if I can, but please start a new thread IF the issue is a different one than is being discussed here.
If this thread we're in now, is dealing with 'tethering', then that's good! Two birds, one stone

OK so to clear up any confusion, here is the scenario. I have a laptop which I want to connect to the internet. The way I want to connect to the internet is by using my HTC 6800 Mogul phone as a USB modem. I will connect my phone to my laptop to a USB slot. My phone will act as the actual modem, the phone itself has an application called WModem in windows mobile 6 that does the actual dialing and connects you to the internet(tether).

It's working in windows just fine, yes, I can surf the net and yes that is what the modem is supposed to do, "surf the net". However I have all my stuff in linux plus I want to be able to SSH to my machine at home and update my files using unison. I might be able to use windows versions of SSH and unison but why should I? I would have to reboot to windows all the time???

I want to be able to use my phone(HTC 6800 "Mogul") as a USB modem. Anyone had success yet? I have heard that its quite possible or maybe it's just an urban myth since there are blogs stating that the possibility is there though I have never seen a testimonial attesting to the fact.

I can now sync my phone to evolution using multisync so my computer knows how to recognize my phone. I need help with the following:

1. How can I make linux connect to the internet using my phone?
2. What application would allow me to use my phone as a USB modem?

Again, the application that I am using in my phone to connect to the internet is WModem under windows mobile 6. If there is anybody out there that can help me I will greatly appreciate it.

... has anyone solved this issue?

I, too, have an HTC smartphone -- a "fuze" not a "mogul" -- that I want to (1) sync, (2) connect to internet [aka, "tether"], and (3) access the on-phone storage card like a flash disk.

Why is "connect my phone" such a black art?

Not sure. I have since upgraded to the "fuze" myself and still not able to "sync" the phone. Only tether, using the procedure in this thread. Linux is like having a genius child, they're probaby smarter than you, capable of infinite things, but you still have to tie their shoes for them.
