Upgraded to Ubuntu bionic beaver, cannot connect via ethernet or wireless, also no GUI
The title describes the gist of it, I know it's likely related to my acpi or graphics card issue with grub or initramfs. But I had it all working in Xenial, I just have to disable the splash screen in grub. I also had some unusual source list for something driver related I believe it was 2 oiblaf sources ,I needed to drop them in order to try to get libvmll6.0 for some dependencies in Clang to build Blender 2.8 This started the whole trouble, a friend suggested I get the latest Kernel.. we knew it might be trouble.. and it is. so Please help. Network manager is masked. And I have sort of exhausted my on-line research. I saw something about live booting, but I currently just have a Xenial live boot and it is not booting, keeps hanging on startup, using my old slow backup computer for now, hanging for the same reasons. But its not unreasonable to hope that Ubuntu has some way to detect or add the devices to a list to be connected. Should mention I'm in Taiwan, so sorry for incongruitously timed responses.

Ok, update, nearly connected to the web was nearly pinging.. but can't resolve host names.. Now I also see why no one has helped.. this trouble was kind of big and new. When Bionic beaver was implemented, many old systems were forsaken because the file sizes grew apparently and things needed to be spread out according to what I read. My issue may just be in etc/netplan/01-netconfig.yaml Netplan seems to be the new default networking configuration tool.. Getting from where I was yesterday to where I am now has been a lot of steps, I guess I hadn't exhausted web resources in solving this, I was just asking the wrong questions.. Once I have connectivity, I can likely start xwindows. So, lets focus on this aspect. everyone can stop running away now. now fire up those coffee mugs.
my 01-netconfig.yaml file looks like this now.. because I guessed you (the intrigued reader)were curious about what I'm doing wrong now in my saga. I'm in Taiwan so I got those nameservers from a list on the net, I got my ip address from a host command. I got the file format online and tinkered with it and could ping but not resolve hostnames.. this seems closest to what should be there by my best reckoning, but it won't try to ping now. I also tried adding bridge information, that may be wrong and the macadress from ifconfig output. Maybe some experts are wondering why, I wasn't sure if not completing the profile as much as posible was slowing me down. I also generated nm files that were in my debug apply settings for netplan.. still no dice also added my wifi , but didnt include the code yet, everything is listed as up and running, but can't resolve ip adresses, network manager is masked.
another update, I am now able to use a live usb to get on. I think I got web connectivity and maybe went way overboard on configuring my network.. but it seems to be connecting now via wifi.. but now since it is, it tries running anacron and takes many hours seems to be in a loop, I let it go for like 6 hours doing an anacron service during boot and thought,, this can't be right. So now I ner get to a prompt to fix anything. So.. maybe I can just save my most important files and reinstall from my stick. The problem was I had Archlinux on the stick and it didnt have a configuration file , well that was the error more or less. Something was likely wrong with my cable, that was what stopped me from connecting to the net. I unplugged it and I think wireless started. i aslo set grub to no modeset.. so now I am looking for ways to install the invidia drivers before it boots, or trying to update grub on the bad system from the usb bionic beaver that i can now use.
Likely last update, I recorded my video files with my camcorder camera.. Now I will do a fresh live usb install, from what I gather, it will be a lot painless, and I am in a far off country and no one here orabroad offered or been able to help in the forum for a few days. I don't really blame anyone, it's the nature of all things and people, constantly growing changing and implementing systems that don't relate well to other systems and no one and nothing can be held to account for complex matters. But there are always the cynics. Should've posted this in noobs, I thing the average person runs from networking, only psycopaths and candidate psychopaths and whatever I am venture into networking enough to see what real dilemmas look like. beer
