Unexplained inability to connect to Internet

Last night my ability to connect to anything on the Internet suddenly dropped.

The odd thing was that I could still connect through Windows running on vmware via bridged networking. In the end I rebooted the PC and I got my connection back. So all is apparently well but I found this baffling. How was it that I could connect via firefox running in XP on vmware in linux but not via firefox (or thunderbird or ping) directly from linux?

I tried disabling the firewll but this made no difference.

what do you mean by "connect", browsing websites? that points to a DNS issue usually.

I couldn't browse, couldn't ping and couldn't connct to my pop box. I thought it might be a DNS issue but how could vmware running in linux find the DNS and not linux?

easy - might have been accessing different DNS servers
