understanding the route table


Hi everyone..

Just a simple but very important question (for me at least).

When we use the command 'route' ...i can't figure out the table.

root@linux:~# route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.3.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
default 192.168.3.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0


How do i interpret this table ?

I mean, what is important to know about route, when i go to setup a network.

first line says that your local network is 192.168.3.0/24 on network adapter eth0
second line says that your loopback interface is up and running just fine
third line says your default gateway is 192.168.3.1

what else do you want to know?
