unable to ping linux from windows

Hello,

I am currently trying to share files on my linux box (Red hat 9). I know I want to use Samba, but first I must get my DNS correct on the network that all my windows machines are on. Correct?

Environment is as follows.

1. DNS server set as static gateway and DNS.

2. All machines are set as static and point to the server mentioned above.

3. Red hat machine can browse by name all windows machines on network and can access the Internet

4. Windows machines can ping red hat by ip, but not by name I gave it.

I do not want to go any further with a Samba setup until i have my windows machines pinging the red hat machine by name.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

GD

I don't know much about configuring a DNS server, but since they're static IPs, you can just specify in a file called "hosts" the IP and the assigned name of the computer. This works for BOTH windows and linux. In linux the file is in /etc. In windows I can't remember where it is but search for the file and it should be the only one called that. It's not the best solution but it is a solution.

ping and file sharing are seperate issues, netbios is not the same as dns.

Anyway if you have a dns server configured with the proper configuration for your lan then you need to configure the windows machines to use it, preferably with a proper dhcp server configuration.

I would recommend just adding the ip and hostname to the windows hosts file as stated above instead of using dns, unless you really need it for some other reason. pinging by name has nothing to do with microsoft network file sharing.

Basically startup Samba and you will see the name you gave your system in the config file on the network.

Edit the file host that you can find in C:\Windows or C:\Winnt

It should be one entry there for the machine you're on, so follow that and you can't go wrong.

*loves having fun with host files on public pc's*
