Unable to login to ftp server

I have a Red Hat Linux 9 box. When I try to use ftp to connect, it does not as for a password gives an authentication failure. The messages are as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings\adhar4>ftp linux2
Connected to linux2.
220 linux2.nda.csci FTP server (Version 5.60) ready.
User (linux2none)): adhar4
530 Must perform authentication before identifying USER.
Login failed.
ftp>

I suspect it to be a firewall issue. But I have disabled ipchains and iptables from my startup.

Can someone tell me how to connect to the machine?
