Unable to get internet connection working

I am trying to set up a linux box on an IBM Thinkpad, using the SUSE 8.2 Pro edition.

I have a home network set up with a Windows 2003 Server box.

The Win box has a ISDN connection to the internet - I have set up connection sharing for this box, and it works fine for the other Windows boxes in my network. It also has DHCP and DNS, and I set up the Windows clients to use 192.168.0.1 as default gateway and DNS server. This works fine.

But when I try to get internet access from the Linux box, i cannot get it. I can ping the other Windows boxes in the network from the Linux box, but when I try to ping an internet address from it, i cannot (I tried both the textual address and 193.69.165.21, but no luck).

Evidently, the linux box is able to make requests to the DNS server, because when I try to ping an internet address, it is able to find out the IP address of that address.

I have followed the standard setup for SUSE without any modifications, and the network card has been correctly identified. I have tried setting up both DHCP and static address setups for the network card, and in both cases i can contact the main server and the other clients on the network, but no internet addresses.

Is there some additional settings i have to make to get the shared internet connection working? I hope someone are able to help me - I wouldn't like to be discouraged from starting with Linux just because of some silly configuration problem!

Well do you have a default gateway configured? You can add a default gateway by using the following command as root

route add default gateway 192.168.0.1

where 192.168.0.1 is your gateway's IP address. I hope this will make it work!

The Same Thing

I came here to ask the same question! lol. I've got an XP desktop with internet connection sharing running, and my laptop can access the internet, but when i boot the same laptop into linux (dual boot), i can't access the net.

tonight, i learned that i can ping my other systems on the lan, and i can ping ip addresses outside, on the internet, but i can't resolve their host names.

it's a dns problem - windows isn't sending my laptop the proper information for some reason, and it's very annoying.

i can't seem to find anyone with the proper answers for my situation...

i tried the 'add default gw' thing, but it didn't work for me

I added the default gateway via route, and it worked like a charm! Thanx for the help! :-)

Have you specified the DNS servers in your /etc/resolv.conf file? It usually is like this

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy are the IP addresses of your ISPs DNS servers.
