Pretty new to Ubuntu. Finding it great but can't get remote desktop or file sharing
happening properly between my (wired) Ubuntu & Windows machines. Hoping someone can help me??

I can file share from Ubuntu, viewing & copying files from and to Windows, but from the Windows computer I can't see a connection at all.

I got the remote desktop working, in order to use my Windows machine thru this one, but for no apparent reason, it's not working now & says 'connection closed' in the remote desktop viewer. When I got it working, I tested it by restarting the Windows machine a couple of times & found it still worked. I think it was when I shut down this Ubuntu machine that I couldn't get it to work again, so thinking the prob is with this one.

I need the remote desktop because I occasionally need a Windows program, but only have one screen, keyboard, etc.

I'm gathering the required software - samba server, VNC etc are all right, as it's worked for me a couple of times, just no idea why it would change when I logged off & on, or for whatever other reason with out me chanigng settings.

This should not change though. Use the tsclient to get the windows desktop on Ubuntu. Select the RDPv5 while connecting.
For sharing the files that are stored in Ubuntu and want to access it on windows you will need samba to be configured. You can install samba from synaptic. Just click and install process.
You can then install Gsambad. It is a GUI samba configuration tool. Another tool is SWAT.

But this advice didn't help me. What is it that you're saying shouldn't change tho? I have tsclient installed, whatever that is. How do I use it? Where do I put in RPDV5? I have samba installed. I don't know whether it's configured right or how to do that. I was presuming it was tho, as I have had the remote desktop working before. What's gsambad & swat & why do I need them too? More info please.

You should be able to use tsclient from Applications > Internet > Terminal server client. When you select it you have options of selecting the host you want to connect to, the protocol you want to use (RDPv5) user password and all. Use it to connect. I have not had problems with it.
While samba could be installed as you say, it is not configured by default and you will need to configure it to share the files and folders. Gsambad and SWAT are the graphical tools that you can install and use to configure samba through GUI.

Says unable to connect :-( Not sure if I got the password right tho. Is it for Windows or Ubuntu?

If it does not connect, it will give the reason. The reason could be that remote connection is not activated. Click on details to check what is the error.

*Details* say '10.0.0.4: unable to connect'.
In remote desktop viewer, says 'Connection Closed. Connection to host 10.0.0.4:5900 was closed'

BTW, just did it then, to be sure there weren't extra descriptions hiding somewhere & it gave me the exact same reply altho I just realised the other computer's not turned on atm.

Is the remote system allowing the remote connections? Is there any firewall in betweens blocking or closing the connection?
