Mine was a different problem in the area of ARP binding on my router, but I saw it because I was looking there. I deleted both fixed IP bindings and the RPi could see the WAN again.

That is exactly my situation! In July 2019 I set up ad-hoc wifi for sniffing to compare how much traffic Androids were making, comparing rooted to stock. How to undo that (or toggle it easily) is off topic for this thread but I got my first clue as to what my issue is here.

This networking stuff doesn't really change that quickly.
