ubuntu 9.10 to vista file shares - samba - HELP!

Hi All,

I really hope you can help me out, I am trying to connect to a windows vista share on my network: //joshwaaa-pc/movies

Iam trying to connect from a ubuntu 9.10 pc wirelessly. I cannot connect to the windows pc manually or via the GUI. I cannot even see the windows pc in the "windows network" places in ubuntu.

I have disabled all firewalls, I have allowed all filesharing (printer, file, no password) on the windows pc. I have double/triple checked the permissions on the share.

Out of pure desperation, I have edited the smb.conf and added ntlm v2, i have even edited the vista security policy to allow ntlm1 & 2 but no luck.

$ smbtree
Enter users password:
session request to 10.0.0.xxx failed (Called name not present)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)
session request to JOSHWAAA-PC failed (Not listening on called name)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)

$ smbclient -L joshwaaa-pc
Enter users password:
session request to JOSHWAAA-PC failed (Not listening on called name)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)

I have been scouring the forums ubuntu and linuxquestions for hours and hours trying every trick in the book but cant get the damned thing to work....

I cant find any errors in the log files.... HELP???!!!??

cheers,

Joshwaaa

Can you ping the server form your client? That is a basic pre-req to windbloze file sharing. Beyond that, your samba server config should have nothing to do with the problem. This is a linux client talking to a windoze host.

BTW. please do not double post.

Apologies for double posting, wasnt sure which one to post to ....

My Setup:

Cloud
|
ADSL router/Firewall
| |
wlan eth
Ubuntu 9.10 pc Vista Ultimate 64bit pc
2.6.31-14-generic

(fairly basic, I have just moved into my new place)

Problem:

I cannot samba/mount windows vista network share ( \\joshwaaa-pc\movies). I cannot even see the vista pc in ubuntu "windows network".

$ smbtree
Enter users password:
session request to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx failed (Called name not present)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)
session request to JOSHWAAA-PC failed (Not listening on called name)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)

$ smbclient -L joshwaaa-pc
Enter users password:
session request to JOSHWAAA-PC failed (Not listening on called name)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)

What I have tried:

I installed samba: sudo apt-get install samba

Ubuntu -

check iptables isn't filtering
checking ufw is not filtering
adding the vista pc name in /etc/hosts
I have tried using the gui and tried manually connection using smbclient and mounting via smbfs.

Editing smb.conf:
moving around hosts/wins options
adding - wins support = yes, client ntlmv2 auth = yes
setting the correct workgroup
adding a samba user/password

Vista config -
- disabling all firewalls
- enabling netbios over tcp/ip
- adding a wins server (address of ubuntu server), consequently removing also ...
- out of pure desperation - editing secpol.msc and changing security:lanman to allow old version of ntlm
- Enabling file sharing ( file, printer), changing it to no password required etc... I have not enable Public folder sharing.
- Allow 'Everyone' as a co-owner to access the share

I originally started out very security conscious, but when I couldn't get it working I rolled everything back to eliminate complexity.

The adsl firewall should not filter any internal traffic, and is only setup to block incoming requests to certain ports ie. 22, 25, 80, 443, 53 etc...

I cannot find any useful errors in the log files log.smbd, log.nmbd.

I can ping the vista pc, I can also connect to an old xp laptop share fine... I ran an nmap scan and ports 135-139 (only 2 are open, 445 is closed) ... I have been advised that maybe the interface is set to public where it should be private .....

Cheers,

Josh K

Well, you have covered all the basics. I did some googling, and came across this-

Hope this helps.
