This has me a little confused. I have two machines networked successfully (Fedora) and can connect to the internet (dial-up) from the main machine. If I try to connect from machine two it is unable to resolve names if the main machine is running Fedora. If I then switch the main machine back to windows, I can connect to the internet with machine two.

I can ping both ways using Fedora on both but just can't get through the main machine (main dial-up connection) when using Fedora on both. Machine number two is configured to look for the gateway that being the main machine.

I don't want to use windoze, so I would appreciate a pointer!

so what you are saying is you want to install a router on Fedora ?

firestarter is a good GUI, it is primarily designed as a firewall, but it also functions as a router.

The machines are networked ok, so is it a case of using a router for the second machine to utilise the internet connection of the main machine?

Yeah, or you can eneble IP masquarade. Read the IP masquarade HOWTO on ldp.org

Im not sure yet if it was the masquerading line or the one that clears the default iptables rules that did it

Thanks, I found that tutorial but still had problems and noticed that my ip_forward line still showed "0". I changed it to "1" and all is working fine!
