Question trying to share internet connection ubuntu and debian etch

hi, i'm following a "tutorial" to configure my two network cards , so that my debian can share it's internet connection with th ubuntu pc
after installing ipmasq and dnsmasq , when i restart dnsmasq it gives an error , "failed to create listening socket: Address already in use (failed to start)
i don't know what to answer when i "dpkg-reconfigure ipmasq"

i didn't went ahead with the steps i was following ,cause this error is not in the example giving , so if i start bad it can't be good.
abd i wasn't able to connect to the net anymore , this resolved after remoiving ipmasq and dnsmasq
i know what i'm doing isn't rite cause i never done this before
i did notice something , a line that goes like "IN= OUT=eth0 ,etc, etc," this is when i would try to acces the internet,
i tried " eth1 ip 10.0.0.8" , Bcast becomes 10.255.255.255 and mask 255.0.0.0
and my ubuntu pc just tries to find a connections ,

Are you already running a DNS named (perhaps a cacheing nameserver) on this machine? If so, it may already have the socket bound for port 53 on one or more of your interfaces.

IMHO, ipmasq is a confusion factor; it generates iptables rules which you could probably generate yourself in a cleaner fashion, and with less debugging. To see the results of its work, you can do

#iptables -nvL

to get a (numeric) listing of all the rules it has produced. In most simple cases, its zone-oriented view of the world just produces a great many more rules than you really need.

There are several tutorials on this topic on the 'Net; a modest example can be found on my site at

http://www.digitalelephant.org/compu.../firewall.html

yes , i'm running a DNS and yes port 53 is in use , ok that explains the error
ok so i don't really need ipmasq , if i setup the rules myself , i'll check your site later , thnx
