hi All,
could anybody indicate what the tcp port 783 is used for? ( btw running RH 9.0)
it says hp-alarm-mgr, but not sure what it is....a netstat -anp|grep 783 gives process "eggcups"...not sure what that does either!!?..

trying to find if I can close 783..

thankx

a look on google gave me this

783
TCP UDP
HP Performance Data - Alarm Manager

search for "tcp port 783" on google and you'll probably find a bit more info about it

Found another one too

"
> What is the hp-alarm-mgr entry? And equally strange for me is the rndc
> from the bind9-package, why its it listening on a port, and how/can I
> remove it.
use:
fuser -n <proto> <port>
to determine which process is using which port, from there you
can use something like dpkg -S /path/to/program to find out which
package it belongs to"

Good luck

Kroppus from Norway!, thankx for the reply!
I had googled around but not much 'useful' information...like nobody explains ( or I haven't come across) what exactly hp-alarm-mgr does, same goes for eggcups..my guess is hp-alarm-mgr might be linked to spamassassin ....It would help if somebody could confirm that, and say how this works and can I close port 783 without any problem...
If I'm not using it, rather close it!.

Thankx all

My advise would be to close the port, then see if there's something that you use that won't work.
i haven't found out anyhn more about tht service either. Haven't really had much time to search either. It's after all weekend
When it coems to security it's better to be to cautious than to reckless.

Hmmm
"Having trouble finding hp-alarm-mgr? Get the 2020Search toolbar and say "good-bye" to those annoying pop-ups. "
Seems to me to be some sort of spyware

Drag and Drop printing?? Sounds like fun
If it has something to do with printers and printing i'm totally blank.
I've only had one printer and that was on my C-64. I've never managed to see the sense in buying one printer when the cost of ink is so high, that it's actually cheaper to buy a new printer than the ink you need for the one you have.
