Could you possibly explain in greater detail what you are trying to accomplish? Sorry, but I don't fully understand what you are trying to say.

Okay the situation is in our college there is a switch which splits the internet connection to various rooms and there is a single port in each of the rooms. Now I want to connect a switch to the port and and connect my laptop and raspberry pi to the ports on the switch. I would like to run the pi by using tightvnc server on laptop. Will it work ... and if so how can i detect the ip of the pi since i do not have a screen to do so.Hope this is clear.

Oh, yes, this is possible. Does the network issue IP addresses dynamically via dhcp? If so, then you should be good. As far as detecting the IP, you could go as far as getting the MAC address of your device, writing this down, then using nmap to scan your network and either locate the devices mac address, or grep it out.

Hmm... Well, if anything, hook up your devices, and use nmap like I said, maybe your raspberry pi will get an IP regardless. Not sure though, but run nmap and see what you come up with.
