Static vs Dynamic IP Address Question

firstly, I have a Mandriva machine which runs my blog and my gaming guild's messageboard. The machine gets its IP address via DHCP from my Linksys router. This was working fine until about christmas, but since then my linux box seems to be requesting a new IP address every 12hours or so. None of the other machines on my network (windows and ubuntu) have this issue, so i'm guessing its something more than the lease expiring. When the IP address changes I have to manually update my routers port forwarding so my websites remain visible. Any clues how I can fix this?

I realise that giving the mandriva box its own static address on my network might be the best way, but I'm not sure how to do this, so any pointers would be gratefully received!

Thanks, in advance, for any help

Tony

i have a linksys router and what i do is configure my computer networking with a static IP and let the router do the DHCP (talk to the ISP)...

just use your browser and get the info and use that info to configure your networking as static (even the nameserver) http:192.168.1.1/

mine is as follows

IP = 192.168.1.100

subnet = 255.255.255.0

default gateway = 192.168.1.1

nameserver = you will have to retrieve from your router

hi,

i think you need a dynamic dns -- so everytime your IP change, other can still see your website.
google around.

HTH.

yes, i am already using a dynamic dns provider. that isn't the problem. the problem is that the mandriva machine is requesting/getting a new IP address every 12hours or so from my router. this wasn't happening 6months ago, so i assume that one of the mandriva updates has altered something. i'm just trying to find out what i have to do to fix it.

edit: Okie, thanks for the advice, i might try this but i don't know which files i need to edit. anyone have any clues?
